Estimating Roofing Debris by Roof Size
Use roof squares to pick the right dumpster for a tear-off.
Know your squares
A roofing square is 100 square feet. Most Inland Empire single-story homes have 15–30 squares.
Weight per square
One layer of asphalt shingles weighs about 250 lbs per square; concrete or clay tile can weigh 900+ lbs per square.
Rule of thumb
For shingles, a 10-yard handles about 15 squares and a 20-yard about 30. Tile roofs typically need multiple smaller loads.
